About Holy Communion
At St. Paul's, we believe that in the Lord's Supper our Savior Jesus Christ gives us His true body and true blood, together with the bread and wine, for the forgiveness of sins, the strengthening of our faith, and the assurance of His love. Jesus Himself says, "Take, eat; this is My body... Drink of it, all of you; this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:26–28; see also Luke 22:19–20 and 1 Corinthians 11:23–25).
Because this precious gift is so holy and so wonderful, we also take seriously the Apostle Paul's instruction that those who receive the Sacrament examine themselves and discern the body of Christ, lest they receive it to their spiritual harm (1 Corinthians 11:27–29). Likewise, Scripture teaches that those who commune together are expressing a unity of faith in Christ and in His teaching: "Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread" (1 Corinthians 10:16–17).
For these reasons, the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod practices Closed Communion. If you are a member of an LCMS congregation, we joyfully invite you to receive the Lord's Supper with us. If you are not a member of an LCMS congregation, we respectfully ask that you refrain from receiving the Sacrament at this time.
Please understand that this practice is not intended to make anyone feel unwelcome or excluded. Rather, it is an expression of our love and care for all who come to the Lord's Table and our desire to remain faithful to Christ's Word. We sincerely look forward to the day when all Christians are united in one confession of the faith and can gather together at the Lord's Table.
